Chennai Port

Chennai Port, formerly known as Madras Port, is the second largest container port of India, behind the Nhava Sheva Port, and the largest port in the Bay of Bengal. It is the third oldest port among the 12 major ports of India with official port operations beginning in 1881, although maritime trade started much earlier in 1639 on the undeveloped shore. It is an artificial and all-weather port with wet docks. Once a major travel port, it become a major container port in the post-Independence era. The port remains a primary reason for the economic growth of Tamil Nadu, especially for the manufacturing boom in South India, and has contributed greatly to the development of the city. It is due of the existence of the port that the city of Chennai eventually became known as the Gateway of South India. The port has become a hub port for containers, cars and project cargo in the east coast of India. From handling a meagre volume of cargo in the early years of its existence, consisting chiefly of imports of oil and motors and the export of groundnuts, granite and ores, the port has started handling more than 60 million tonnes of cargo in recent years. In 2008, the port's container traffic crossed 1 million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs). It is currently ranked the 86th largest container port in the world and there are plans to expand the capacity to about 140 million tonnes per annum. It is an ISO 14001:2004 and ISPS-certified port and has become a main line port having direct connectivity to more than 50 ports around the world.

Port of Kolkata

The Port of Kolkata is a riverine port in the city of Kolkata, India, located around 203 kilometres (126 mi) from the sea. It is the oldest operating port in India, and was constructed by the British East India Company. The Port has two distinct dock systems - Kolkata Docks at Kolkata and a deep water dock at Haldia Dock Complex, Haldia. In the 19th century Kolkata Port was the premier port in British India. After independence its importance decreased because of factors including the Partition of Bengal (1905), reduction in size of the port hinterland and economic stagnation in eastern India. It has a vast hinterland comprising the entire North East of India including West Bengal, Bihar, Jharkhand, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Assam, NorthEast Hill States and two landlocked neighbouring countries namely, Nepal and Bhutan and also the Autonomous Region of Tibet (China). With the turn of the century the volume of throughput has again started increasing steadily.

Dock systems

The Kolkata Port Trust (KoPT) manages two separate dock agglomerations - the Kolkata Dock System (KDS) and the Haldia Dock Complex (HDC).

Apart from this, there are around 80 major riverine jetties, and many minor jetties, and a large number of ship breaking berths.

Haldia Dock Complex (HDC)

It is situated at 22°02′N 88°06′E around 60 kilometres (37 mi) away from the pilotage station. The complex consists of:
  • Impounded Dock. System with 12 Berths
  • 3 Oil Jetties in the River
  • 3 Barge Jetties in the River for handling Oil carried by Barges.
  • Haldia Anchorage for lash vessels.

Kandla Port

Kandla, also known as the Kandla Port Trust is a seaport in Kutch District of Gujarat state in western India, near the city of Gandhidham. Located on the Gulf of Kutch, it is one of major ports on west coast. Kandla was constructed in the 1950s as the chief seaport serving western India, after the partition of India fromPakistan left the port of Karachi in Pakistan.

The Port of Kandla is located on the Gulf of Kutch on the northwestern coast of India some 256 nautical miles southeast of the Port of Karachi in Pakistan and over 430 nautical miles north-northwest of the Port of Mumbai (Bombay). It is the largest port of India by volume of cargo handled. Kandla history kandla Port Trust, India's busiest major port in recent years, is gearing to add substantial cargo handling capacity with private sector participation. The west coast port handled 72,225 million tonnes of cargo in 2008-09, over 11% more than 64,920 million tonnes handled in 2007-08. Even as much of this growth has come from handling of crude oil imports, mainly for Essar Oil's Vadinar refinery in Gujarat, the port is also taking measures to boost non-POL cargo. Last fiscal, POL traffic accounted for 63 per cent of the total cargo handled at Kandla Port, as against 59% in 2007-08.
Although Kandla Port Trust officials declined to elaborate given the ongoing election code of conduct, it is reliably learnt that the port will soon initiate the process of selecting developers for four clean cargo berths that together aim to handle 8 million tonnes of cargo. The four berths will be supported by a 14 m draft capable of handling 75,000 dwt vessels. The port has already received encouraging response from prospective bidders, for the project that is estimated to cost nearly 5,000 million INR.

Mumbai Port

Mumbai Port Trust is a port which lies midway on the West coast of India, on the natural deep-water harbour of Mumbai, Maharashtra. The harbour spread over 400 square kilometres (150 sq mi) is protected by the mainland of Konkan to its east and north and by the island city of Mumbai to its west. The harbour opens to the south to the Arabian Sea.The port is administered by the Mumbai Port Trust (MbPT), an autonomous corporation wholly owned by the Government of India. The port is primarily used for bulk cargo, while most container traffic is directed to Nhava Sheva port across the harbour.

History

Mumbai Harbour has been used by ships and boats for centuries. It was used by the Maratha Navy, as well as the British and Portuguese colonial navies. The first of the present-day docks of the Mumbai Port were built in the 1870s. Bombay Port Trust (BPT) was established as a corporation on June 26, 1873. BPT's founding chairman was Colonel J.A. Ballard.
Port development was undertaken by the civil engineering partnership Sir John Wolfe-Barry and Lt Col Arthur John Barry as Joint Consulting Engineers to the Bombay Port Trust at the end of the nineteenth century. From its establishment, the port has been the gateway to India, and was a primary factor in the emergence of Mumbai as the commercial capital of India. The port and the corporation took their present names in the 1990s.Over the decades, the port underwent tremendous expansion, with the addition of berths and cargo handling capacities. However, Mumbai's expanding growth and population pressure constrained the growth of the port by the 1970s. This led to the establishment of the Nhava Sheva port across Mumbai Harbour in Navi Mumbai on the Konkan mainland. Nhava Sheva began operations in 1989, and most container traffic now flows through Nhava Sheva.

Panjim (Panaji) Port

Panjim (Panaji) Port is a small port located in Goa state, India.

In January 2013, after a Supreme Court ruling cut off the port's iron ore commerce, Goa's Captain of Ports proposed increasing coal imports at Panjim. However, infrastructural limitations made large-scale coal imports impractical, and the iron ore mining ban was revoked in 2014, allowing iron ore to regain its traditional status as the port's main commodity. In January 2013, Goa's Captain of Ports suggested that coal imports be increased within the port's jurisdiction as a means of replacing lost iron ore revenues, after India's Supreme Court banned all iron mining in the state. The import plan called for incoming coal ships from South Africa and New Zealand to unload their cargo onto barges at Panaji Port's outer anchorage, with barges then carrying coal to jetties in the Mandovi and Zuari river basins, and trucks providing onward ground transportation to customers. The Captain of Ports also suggested the possibility of direct coal imports into Panaji Port on a "trial basis".
While the Goan government authorized the proposed coal imports, India's Supreme Court ultimately lifted the ban on Goan iron mining in April 2014, and there is no indication that any large-scale coal imports ever took place at Port of Panjim.

Paradip Port

Paradip Port (20°15′55.44″N 86°40′34.62″E) is an artificial, deep-water port on the East coast of India in Jagatsinghpur district of Odisha. It is situated at confluence of the Mahanadi river and the Bay of Bengal. It is situated 210 nautical miles south of Kolkata and 260 nautical miles north of Visakhapatnam. The port is administered by the Paradip Port Trust (PPT), an autonomous corporation wholly owned by the Government of India.

History
The land on which the port was built was once a mangrove swamp, used large by local villagers for hunting, fishing and the collection of wood. In 1948 the Port (Technical) Committee of the Government of India determined an additional port was required between Visakhapatnam and Calcutta.
This need for another eastern port became particularly obvious following Partition when the Port of Dhaka was separated from India. In 1950 the Central Water & Power Commission proposed a Port between the Kolkata and Vishakapatnam, then Chief Minister of Odisha Biju Patnaik suggested construction of port in Paradip on Mahanadi river. The Paradip Port was the brainchild of Biju Patnaik. The foundation stone for Paradip port was laid on 3 January 1962 by Pt. Jawaharlal Nehru, the Prime Minister of India. The inscription on the black granite stone records a simple message in Oriya, English and Hindi: "Willed by the people, I commend you, to this another National Adventure". The State Government of Orissa started construction work on 15 March 1964, with the Central Government taking over management on 1 June 1965. The construction of Iron Ore Berth was completed and INS "INVESTIGATOR‟ had the privilege of maiden berthing in the port on 12 March 1966. The port was declared open by Mr. Peter Stambolić. The Port commenced operations with the export of a few thousand tons of iron ore, and has subsequently grown to the point of handling more than 50 million tonnes of cargo during the 1st decade of the 21st century.

History
Although the need for building a port on the east coast to access Central Provinces was felt by the British in the 19th century, the proposal of Col. H.Cartwright Reid ofBritish Admiralty for constructing a harbour at Visakhapatnam was approved by the Government only after the First World War. The Inner Harbour was built by the Bengal Nagpur Railway between 1927 and 1933 to facilitate the export of manganese ore from the Central Provinces. The port, built at a cost of ₹378 lakhs was inaugurated byLord Willingdon on 19 December 1933.
During the Second World War, the military significance of the port increased. After India's independence, the port witnessed growth under the various Five Year Plans. Over time, the port has grown from one with 3 berths handling 1.3 lakh tonnes per annum to one with 24 berths and annual traffic of 65 million tonnes. The port was notified as a major port in 1964 under the Major Port Trusts Act, 1963. Under the Act, the Visakhapatnam Port Trust is in charge of running the port.
